The Essential Items Every Girl Needs in Her 2026 Wardrobe

Every January, I get kind of reflective. I sit back, take a sip of my iced vanilla latte and think back to my favourite pieces from the previous year, before thinking ahead about the possibilities for the year to come.

There’s no doubt going to be a few surprise hits (think back to last year’s sneakerina revelation), but I’m here today to give you some ol’ reliables. Tried, true, and trendless – for the time being, at least. These items are celebrating their time in our warm, adoring gaze and are essential to surviving the mean streets of 2026.

Blazers: Sophisticated, but Casual

I’m not talking about the dusty old blazer your elderly high school teacher wore every day for 30 years. A relative newcomer to our smart/casual collections, this blazer is light, soft and slightly oversized. It’s easy to mix and match with almost everything: you can throw it over a slip dress, layer it on top of a tank (or other fashion-forward tops) and jeans, or even pair it with a mini skirt and boots.

I’d personally resist the urge to be too vibrant with the colour, in the name of maximising versatility.  So lean into neutral tones like black or chocolate brown; that way, it’ll slot perfectly into your wardrobe and elevate outfits with a layer of sophistication and a bold silhouette.

Denim Staples

It won’t be a huge shock to many of you that, in 2026, denim is still a cornerstone. But there are some changes this year. Thicker materials will give your casual looks a more premium aesthetic, and wider-set designs are here to stay. So, needless to say, a couple of pairs of wide-leg jeans (blue and black to cover bases) are essential. They feel effortlessly modern and can blend easily with t-shirts, blazers, and knitwear.

Denim skirts are also making a big comeback – especially midi skirts with raw hems or front slits. They’re easy to style and can carry the perfect spring and summer outfits when paired with a simple tank or tee, along with the right amount of jewellery.

Wide Leg Trousers: Comfortable Meets Chic

If you’re up against the clock and staring at your wardrobe, with plans to meet with friends or a highly anticipated date fast approaching, then a couple of pairs of wide-leg trousers are just what you need.

Give yourself the advantage of having a comfortable pair of pleated, high-waisted trousers that can do both formal and informal. They add inches to your legs and lay a solid foundation for an outfit that pops – either letting other elements do the talking or attracting eyes to coloured accents, like footwear or a vibrant tank beneath a blazer. They’ll give you an effortlessly chic look with next to no effort.

A Chunky Knit Cardigan

Although it’s seasonal, a chunky cardigan is a must-have for the 6 colder months of the year. A trend we’ve been seeing over the past 6-12 months has been the revival of granny-style knitwear that tugs at our nostalgia. But it isn’t just an homage to simpler times; knitted cardigans are being combined with modern designs to create outfits that represent the clash of the old and the new. Oversized knitwear that dazzles with bright colours, bringing life to a backdrop of muted tones. It’s perfect for layering over dresses, tanks, and even activewear for an extra juxtapositional pop.

The Perfect Trench Coat For You

While we’re on the topic of items for the colder months of the year, we need to talk about coats. A statement trenchcoat is non-negotiable at this point. You can take your pick from the huge range of tan and black options, but I personally prefer a thicker wool coat. It’ll work with jeans, leggings,  dresses, or skirts and wouldn’t look out of place at a fancy restaurant or an average coffeehouse. A trenchcoat is supposed to be a statement, so you can push the boat out a little more when it comes to colour: I regularly see olives, soft purples, and pale blues during my walks around my home city.

The Obligatory Hoodie, But New and Improved for 2026

But not just any hoodie. Think of it more as an elevated hoodie; more polished than your basic hooded garment. Streetwear is growing up; becoming more sophisticated and appropriate for formal events, so our most comfortable items need more polish. Clean designs on quality fabric, slightly oversized and in a muted shade. Pair witha trench coat, wide leg trousers, and a pair of trainers for a cool girl look that’s still comfortable (and just one matcha away from being complete).

Closing Thoughts

If you’re struggling inspo for your outfits in 2026 and looking for some ideas, then hopefully I’ve been able to help. Remember, some general themes to be mindful of are dressing for comfort, muted tones (with a couple of notable exceptions), and a silhouette that’s right for the occasion.

I know we’re all used to mini breakdowns while we get ready for a night out, but this unhealthy approach needs to die. Getting dressed up should feel fun, not stressful. I’m not expecting this list to be a 1:1 match for you and your style, so adjust here and there – you should have plenty of wiggle room and no shortage of alternatives in online stores, department stores and vintage apparel shops.
